In the midst of a chaotic morning the sun steals into the kitchen and freezes me where I stand. The caresses of direct sunlight pulls moments out of mess and I can’t look away.

My personal history is papered in still lifes. Not artificial assemblages but the ones we encounter on our own counters at the end of a meal. I’m interested in these moments plucked out of life. Not snapshots, but meandering, peeking, snooping perusals. In settling my eye on the banality of the kitchen, I consciously elevate it to the level of consideration that oil painting has historically claimed. This is my territory. These monuments are still life, self-portrait, landscape. Hence, the square.
